This is so true. One of the most detrimental things we can do is compare ourselves to others or to an earlier version of ourselves, as you point out. We've been raised to compare ourselves to everybody else and usually find ourselves lacking. Making an effort to change this habit, because that's what it is, can reap significant results! I only look back to remind myself where I was and where I am today with regards to my success with losing the weight I have after figuring out what worked with my diet. Once I learned that it wasn't me per se and it was the way I was eating and how it impacted my thyroid health it was a life altering revelation.
I don't think it's harmful to look back as long as we are using it to be constructive with ourselves.
