Weight

Dear Patient,

I want you to know that you are a worthy, magnificent, brilliant human no matter what you weigh.

I say this because I’m often asked if acupuncture helps with weight loss.

It doesn’t.

Weight is the product of genetics, food intake and physical activity. Anything else, other than medical weight loss surgery, may help you drop a few pounds in the short term, but that's about it. Pills, powders, poultices, tiny acupuncture needles - these do not fundamentally alter the shape and size of your body.

Please hear this: your value has nothing to do with the number on a scale, the inches of circumference around your waistline, or your body mass index. Do not listen to anyone who says otherwise.

The fullness of your physical being, the mass of your bones and sinews and fluids—these are the essence of you. Every ounce of you has a place here, every pound belongs on this planet, and every inch of you—all of you— is worthy of love.
