Reassurance
Dear Patient,
There’s a great point on the wrist for nausea, Pericardium 6. I’ll often needle this on my pregnant patients to relieve nausea and morning sickness.
But sometimes a pregnant person doesn’t want me to needle it. They like feeling nauseous. Even though it’s uncomfortable, the nausea is reassuring. It’s a little dispatch from the body saying “Yes! You’re pregnant!” It can be especially heartening after a struggle with infertility.
Discomfort can serve many functions. It can teach us a lesson, or nudge us to make changes, or remind us of our limitations. It can be in service of something much greater than ourselves, like the birth of a child.
In our quest to minimize life’s discomforts, we should remember to look for the reassurances they offer. Pain is a testament to our resilience, a reminder of what we’ve already survived and what we’re living for. Bodies get bruised, systems fail, hearts break. Sometimes the pain and brokenness of it all can even give birth to new beginnings, beauty, and hope.
Love and gratitude,
