Newness
Dear Patient,
Each day you have a new body.
I like to remind people of this when they say something like, “Wow, the needles hurt more today than they did last time,” or “I felt a lot of relief after my treatment three weeks ago but haven’t felt as good after the last two sessions.”
Your body is different every day. Cells regenerate, hormones cascade through their cycles, nutrients move in and out of your digestive system, you bang your shin on the coffee table, something in your yard blooms and spews out pollen. Your body recalibrates, responding to external stimuli and its own internal algorithms.
It can be disheartening when things seem to be going well and then progress stalls. You wonder if you’ll ever feel as good as you did before. But do not lament your body of yesterday, dear patient. It was meant only to exist for a day. And don’t cling too tightly to your body of today either, for it will again be different tomorrow. Perhaps better, even. Love it, honor it, and welcome each day’s new body.
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
