Needles
Dear Patient,
Many of you don't like needles, I get it.
Once, when I was a kid, I had a weird rash on my neck and my mom took me to the dermatologist. He scraped off some the rash, a procedure that was mostly painless, but when I sat up from the table and looked in the mirror, I saw dozens of red bloody pinpricks dotting my neck. Within seconds I passed out cold.
Another time I was having blood drawn at the pediatrician’s office. I watched, mesmerized, as my blood was sucked up into tiny glass tubes, blood that mere seconds before had been coursing through my body. I saw sparkles, and again passed out cold.
So I haven’t always liked needles. Yet I interact with them every day. I’ve blown through well over a million acupuncture needles in my career so far. I’ve made friends with needles.
It helps to think of needles as something beyond a mere sharp pointy object. They’re a conduit, a gateway, a key that unlocks potential. In fact, any sort of discomfort can have the same function. You might like needles a little more if you think of them this way. I know I do.
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
