Dear Patient,
Once I was treating a patient for respiratory issues. I did my usual favorite points and then noticed that the skin on the front of his throat was bright red. There’s an acupuncture point there, right in that depression between the two tendons at the base of your throat. It seemed to be screaming at me, “please help!”
So I needled it.
This patient, who was no stranger to acupuncture, said, “Oh, thank you. I love that point.”
That was early in my career, and a good lesson in the importance of simple observation. My patient’s body needed something and sent me a sign.
You don’t have to be an acupuncturist to receive the signals from your own body. That variation in skin color or texture, that change in the quality of your voice, that weird taste in your mouth—these are messages. Say thank you and be open to hearing what your body has to say.
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
