Magic
Dear Patient,
People will sometimes ask me if acupuncture is magic. I get it—a few needles plus an hour of rest equals a migraine dispelled, a solid eight hours of sleep achieved, a breech baby turned. It really does seem like magic.
But think about modern medicine for a moment. In-vitro fertilization, robotic joint replacement, cataract surgery, even the simple antibiotics we take for granted—such interventions would have seemed like magic to our ancestors.
Acupuncture is a very, very old form of medicine. It’s the product of careful observation of the natural world, commitment to helping people in need, and a lot of love. Generations of study, and lifetimes of trial and error have been poured into this ancient practice. It has endured because it works. And still it has the ability to delight and surprise. In this way, it is a bit like magic.
But the true magic, my dear, lies not in the shaft of this tiny needle or in a practitioner’s capable hands. The magic is within you, as it always has been. You are the one doing the work. You are the magic.
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
