How Are You?
Dear Patient,
My first question to a patient is usually “How are you” or “How are you feeling?”
Most people respond right away. They'll say “I’m okay,” or update me on their health condition.
But sometimes a person will take a breath and pause before answering. These are interesting moments. A person is weighing their words, or they might be tuning in to their own body for the first time all day.
I think of these seconds as inviting the truth to enter. So often we say “I’m fine” when we’re really not fine. An honest answer from you guides my choices and helps me do my job. It helps you feel better.
The next time someone asks how you are—try not to answer right away. Try—a different approach. Tell them anything other than you’re fine. Pick your worst moment from the last 24 hours, or a worry that’s been plaguing you, or a small victory, or something that made you laugh. Invite a deeper connection.
You’re not fine. I’m not fine. No one is fine. Let’s stop pretending like we are. How are you? Take a beat and answer—honestly.
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
