Dear Patient,
This week I’m celebrating a couple of big milestones at my clinic. Twelve years ago on January 15, 2010 I opened my clinic. I had a dozen secondhand recliners, a few thousand acupuncture needles at the ready, and zero experience running a business. I treated a grand total of four patients my first week.
And today is the 10-year work anniversary for one of my acupuncturists. Back in early 2012 he reached out to introduce himself. He’d been in practice for several years, always in a private room setting, and was intrigued by our high volume, low cost model. He loved the idea of being able to help more people by charging an affordable price. After a few conversations and some notes scribbled on a napkin over lunch, I offered him a job.
I love looking back on these milestones because in both cases, I didn’t really know what I was doing. Yes, they were leaps of faith but they were also lessons in following your curiosity. Curiosity led me to this model of patient care that I love. It led me to hire another full-time acupuncturist, which enabled my clinic to expand our reach and serve more patients. It led my colleague ten years ago to send me an email out of the blue because he wanted to learn something new.
Author Elizabeth Gilbert says that following your curiosity can lead to your passion. I’d add that it can also lead you to your purpose.
So…where’s your curiosity leading you?
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
I needed this reminder today. Thank you!
Happy anniversary, Alexa.
