A Little Help from the Outside
Dear Patient,
One of the great benefits of acupuncture is that it invites you to step away from the constructs of your life—work, obligations, demands—and reach inward to reconnect with yourself.
It’s funny that this happens in response to a foreign object. A tiny stainless steel needle is inserted, and the world falls away. You emerge from this stroll through your inner landscape feeling renewed, reenergized, more yourself somehow.
Sometimes I’ll do acupuncture on myself if I really need it. It will help with whatever’s bothering me, but it’s just not the same. To get that profound feeling of coming home into myself, I need someone else to place the needles—the magic of another person helping me.
So it’s good to ask for help, and to accept it when it’s offered. Because sometimes you need something external to help you get more in touch with yourself—a person, a teaching, a needle. Platitudes like follow your heart and the answer lies within are good reminders to draw upon your own inner resources. But they leave out a crucial component. To access all the goodness within, sometimes you need a little help from the outside.
Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist
